An Open Letter to Senator John McCain

My wife was livid yesterday morning. When this happens I normally cower in a corner of our basement hoping to blend into the walls, but yesterday was different. She was ranting about faux Republican senators Lindsey Graham and John McCain.

Her rant was in reaction to the disrespectful treatment by said senators of Rand Paul following his filibuster last week, which led to the letter I wrote to John McCain below.

Get the hell out of public life, John McCain, and take Meghan with you.

Get the hell out of public life, John McCain, and take Meghan with you.

As noted in yesterday’s post by Henshaw, McCain and Graham represent the wing of the Republican Party that can’t see the forest for the trees when it comes to national defense. If you oppose what is an obviously failed approach to our military adventures overseas, you’re called “isolationist” and someone who will, as McCain put it, “endanger America’s future.” No. The war wing of the Republican Party’s insistence on pointless war-making endangers America’s future.

As you’ll see in the letter I sent to McCain yesterday, which will ensure I’m a target for future drone strikes, I point out that America’s approach to “war” is ridiculous.  I believe in a strong national defense, peace through strength, and all that. What I don’t believe in is an endless global war with no fixed enemy that apparently includes American citizens on American soil as potential targets.

This is a dangerous precedent; a government that can go to war, even on its own soil, because it says it can. This policy is surely unconstitutional, which is exactly Rand Paul’s point.

It’s quite possible that Graham and McCain have confused Rand Paul with his congressman father, Ron Paul. Ron Paul truly is isolationist, and while the apple may not fall far from the tree, Rand Paul falls far enough away from it to strike a reasonable balance between isolationism and militarism.

Rand Paul made it clear that he’s not opposed to drone strikes or military action against enemies on the battlefield. What he is opposed to is the type of whimsical warfare that makes the U.S. President the sole arbiter of who is targeted.

What this means practically is that it’s high time to get rid of dinosaurs like McCain and Graham. They represent a danger to our liberties just as much as the redistributionist Democrats who seek to regulate every aspect of our lives in order to save us from ourselves…

Senator McCain,

Your conduct following Senator Paul’s filibuster is a disgrace. You represent an ossified and outdated Republican establishment that myself and millions of others are working to get rid of in the coming years.

Though we do not live in your state, we will be active in defeating you in the next election by providing resources to whoever runs against you, be it a Republican or a Democrat. It is long past the time for you and your ilk to get out of Washington. We’re tired of you “reaching across the aisle,” aka selling us down the river, and making nice with the liberal press corps to feed your oversized ego.

We will rally behind leaders like Senator Paul, Senator Cruz and Rep. Amash as they defend the Constitution and the rights of American citizens. It is frightening to us that you would criticize Senator Paul for having the courage to question the administration’s policy on drone strikes, and to speak eloquently for those of us who hold our liberty more dearly than we do our supposed “security.” We will take liberty and freedom over security every time. You represent everything we hate about big government and how it seeks to infantilize its citizens under the guise of security.

Moreover, you continue to support a “war” that is doing nothing but killing and maiming our soldiers. Either get the job done through total war, or bring them home. These half-assed, politically-correct police actions do nothing but drain away money we don’t have and destroy the lives or America’s best men and women.

Change is coming one way or another, and either you statist, big-government bastards are going to win, or the American citizen is going to win. For the sake of America and its future generations, we hope you lose and go back home ASAP.

Sincerely,

Club and Mrs. Soda
